T&S Provision to Youth Orgs Festivals and Events

In 2019 we began working with the Discovery Zone at Shuttleworth to provide for their regular events and provision to schools. This involved two aspects:

  • T&S team attendance to Shuttleworth air-shows to running our unique glider and gravity racer design workshops

  • Bulk provision of cardboard gliders, gravity launcher and training for their own staff to run sessions on site.

The rapid build nature of our kits with environmentally sustainable materials, minimal adhesives and controlled flight in a confined space have enabled Shuttleworth to provide 40 minute sessions for 6 groups of 30 children in a day as part of a carousel. At air-shows, we cater for typically 60 -100 children who will spend typically from 20 minutes to 2 hours on our stand developing their ideas.

As a part of our service to Shuttleworth we maintain their launchers and have developed gliders and racing buggies by request and FOC for their unique needs such as modelling specific aircraft in their unique collection. At present the Discovery Zone promotes Miles Magister kits that can be modified to perform stunts or be decorated for scale representation. At present we provide Magisters to the OWMAC (Old Warden Model Flying Club) and Hurricane kits to The Joystick Club of Great Britain for their outreach programmes. In addition we provide cardboard gravity racers for a friction based learning resource.

Groups that Shuttleworth have provided for with our resources include:

  • Air Scouts

  • RAF Days

  • School and Home Education group visits.

UPHOW?
Progression and Projects

Since 2015 our Aeroschool Uk Flight curriculum has been the most popular of our resources.

We performed a marketing map of educational products available nationally found most so called educational products to be either one or a number of individual products with no clear strategy of progression in terms of explaining flight strategically.  Most were entirely confusing particularly those that employed images of  light aircraft, or Bernoulli principle diagrams that could not be demonstrated by the gliders oir planes that they accompanied. The least educational and that actually may present an actual barrier to learning by virtue of their complexity  in our opinion are those that employ fiddly balsa sticks tissue paper and a rubber motor  - resulting in a very random flight path with little bearing on trim or c/g.  These are not only difficult to teach with in a medium sized class they also require plenty of space  - preferably outdoors and lots of time. Other products use polystyrene - resulting in environmental issues if lost. Some make use of balsawood but fail to actually demonstrate the principles concerned other than to fly quite nicely. Basic science tells us we need to isolate variables in order to prove that cause and effect cannot be attributed to another variable. Our glider range seeks to tackle that chellenge.

Solution:

We arrived at a specification for a progressive range of educational products to explain flight in an interactive and kinaesthetic way and have developed these for small and large group activities. 'Up' must be the shortest word to summarise the purpose of flight and so UPHOW a thought provoking brand name to stick in the memory to summarise the explanitory purpose of our products.

upHow kits

We manufacture and supply glider kits in bulk relatively cheaply without unnecessary packaging.

These can be accompanied by explanatory videos and paperwork if required.

We can train your educational team or you can attend training days at our Northants based venue.
